1. Read the text
English is a prominent international language in communications,
science, business, aviation, entertainment, and diplomacy and also on the
Internet. It is most often studied as a foreign language in the European Union,
followed by French, German, and Spanish. It is also the most studied in the
People's Republic of China, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.
A degree in English can make available many
different careers. While it is the first step to becoming an English language
and literature teacher in secondary schools, those who study English also go on
to become, among other things, translators, editors, journalists, public
relations managers, or administrators in the arts and so on. The linguistic as
well as the critical and analytical skills developed in the study of literature
are an important ability for those interested in such fields as international
law and international business.
With 80 percent of international business communications written in
English and most of the world's trade and financial business transacted in the
language, companies worldwide acknowledge the necessity of having an English
speaking workforce. In today's competitive world, everyone needs skills that
will equip them for a changing work environment. Technical and communicative
skills are highly desired by companies yet proficiency in English is essential
for many posts.
